Leadership and Employee Engagement

Leadership and Employee Engagement

Leaders and employees at every level within our organization are vital to Vistra’s success. To achieve our goal of Best Defenses, all leaders and employees must work together to identify hazards and implement the best possible defenses to mitigate those hazards. We realize that safety is not about the absence of accidents, but rather the presence of defenses.

Vistra’s leaders’ role is to influence their employees to accomplish their tasks by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Each leader models the Best Defenses safety culture by supporting and promoting our people (Human Performance Improvement), processes (Behavior-Based Safety), and programs (OSHA Voluntary Protection Program). Good leaders understand that safety and production go hand in hand, and production should never be placed above safety. Safety must be a core value of all leaders within the organization.

Vistra leaders commit to safety by:

  • Accepting responsibility for safety within their organization
  • Enforcing established procedures and policies
  • Providing resources to identify and eliminate hazards
  • Positively influencing the safety of their teams
  • Recognizing that everyone wants to return home to their family and friends in the same condition or better that they arrived to work
  • Embracing and practicing Vistra’s Best Defenses

All Vistra employees are engaged in the Best Defenses Safety Culture by following safety procedures and policies, reporting safety concerns, offering safety suggestions, and participating in safety tasks. We realize that our employees are closest to the task at hand and are most familiar with the hazards. Our employees are critical in identifying hazards, recognizing opportunities for improvement, and creating and implementing the Best Defense. Employees are engaged in the Best Defenses Safety Culture through the use of the Human Performance Improvement (HPI) concepts and tools, participating in Vistra’s Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) process, and being involved with the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) process.

Employees can be engaged by making safety a personal commitment to themselves. After all, you are the one most responsible for your safety. This can be done by:

  • Accepting responsibility for your safety and the safety of others
  • Following established procedures
  • Proactively identifying and eliminating hazards
  • Positively influencing the safety of your coworkers
  • Recognizing that everyone wants to return home to their family and friends in the same condition that they arrived to work
  • Embracing and practicing Best Defense
